B763 F/O hijacks the airplane and asks for asylum in Geneva
An Ethiopian Airlines airplane was hijacked this monday by the first officer, who was forced to land at the Geneva's International Airport, Switzerland. The man gave up himself and asked for assylum. The flight had about 200 passengers on board, and departed Addis Abeba enroute to Rome.
The swiss authorities indicated that the pilot took over the controls of the airplane locking the captain out of the cockpit when the pilot in command was taking a restroom break. Once landed, the first officer used the escape ropes to exit the aircraft by the cockpit windows and inmediately waited for the authorities to arrive on scene.
The first officer declared himself he was the hijacker of the flight and explained to the authorities that his life was in danger back in Ethiopia. Two Eurofighter combat aircraft escorted the hijacked Boeing 767 until it landed in Geneva.
Ethiopian Airlines indicated through a press release that both the passengers and crew are safe. The airport had to be close for a few hours until the incident was cleared and the first officer taken into custody.
